The artistic output of a nation does not merely represent the expressions of thoughts and emotions of individuals, but constitutes an authentic portrait of an entire population.
Thus it is the symbol of Italian spirit. Those who know this generation know that, given the right opportunities, it could accomplish great things in contemporary art and do honour to Italy in future years, with its ability to innovate, to narrate, to reveal its own evocative mission to the world.
Gemine Muse is a valuable occasion for young Italian artists, whatever the discipline they are engaged in: from visual arts to music, from design to dance and theatre. With this present initiative promoted by the Ministry for Youth together with the ANCI and with the collaboration of the GAI, young Italian talents
have the opportunity to enrich the sphere of Italian creativity, uniting their contemporary spirit with Italy’s ancient culture.
No generation goes down in history for only having preserved the past, but rather for having been able to introduce new ideas, works and protagonists into the thread of human progress. We are all committed, in our diverse contexts, to the same great challenge, which is to make those who come after us say: here, those people, they began to construct the future.

Italian cities, with their history, their art and their urban spaces, welcome young artists and their works.
It was in this spirit that the National Commission for Youth Policies of the Anci, in which there are 107 participating city councillors for youth policies and over which I have the honour of residing, enthusiastically approved the project entitled Italia Creativa, Creative Italy, of which Gemine Muse is a part and in which Anci, the National Association of Italian Municipalities, is involved together with the GAI, in collaboration with the Department for Youth of the Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri, Italy’s council of ministers.
Gemine Muse is a very interesting initiative, and the involvement of Anci, which is responsible for coordinating the events, is just one example of its activities regarding initiatives for youth in our cities.
The Anci will continue in this direction, convinced that the links between young people and art will help reinforce the relationships in our cities between those who live in them and their history, confi rming their role as the place of privilege for the expression of artistic creativity.

Some years ago, while working on the theme of the new forms of artistic creativity and possible ways in which to support them, it was decided to focus on two elements that were particularly signifi cant and innovative: on the one hand, the dialogue between the languages of the new artistic products and the places that had been most important in the history of art, and on the other, the collaboration between various cities and levels of public administration such as municipalities, superintendencies and ministries. Thus was born a project of great originality, Gemine Muse, which today, edition after edition, can justly be considered a success, well known and infl uential, and which has involved hundreds of artists and sites over the years. This is an experience of continual comparison and contrast between tradition and innovation, an indispensable point of reference for Italy’s cultural policies.

Italy is still a country rich in talent. A creative country. A longed-for destination for all those who are seeking the inspiration that comes from living in a place that is rich in history, culture, traditions, good living, with landscapes that are still extraordinary and uncontaminated. In a global society it is possible to choose where to live, how to live, without fear of feeling “foreign”. This is why so many young people begin to travel, looking for places where they can give body and soul to their own desires for a professional, social and cultural life that lives up to their expectations. In such a situation, public policies have to be oriented in two directions: to create and develop environments that promote the development of young creativity, and to favour those conditions that make a country an “attractor” for new talent. Following the fi rst direction we fi nd the by now longstanding project and experience of Gemine Muse. Young people full of passion who come together with art, culture, and cityscapes that are Italy’s history, and from which they draw the inspiration for making new art. An added value for the museums, for the cities. A way of nourishing a great tradition. Gemine Muse is a fertile seed, fed by the passion of artists, the curators, the cities’ cultural administrators, and by those who work in cultural institutions. A witness to how often talented young artists are found living and developing under the ashes. It is thanks to them that we can still call Italy a creative country. If only we were at least grateful!

AN ITALIAN JOURNEY

Each year Gemine Muse redraws Italian geography by involving art, history and the new protagonists in contemporary artistic research.
It is an ideal journal comprising several ways to look at cities and their historic legacy through the eyes of younger generations, with points of departure and destinations that change from year to year.
Our dual north-south and south-north itinerary begins in TORINO, where three emerging artists, inspired by the ring of Stefanus and Valatruda and the theme The bond of the different, reinterpret the art and spaces of Palazzo Madama. We then go to BIELLA where an exhibition in Palazzo Ferrero and the Museo del Territorio Biellese entitled Frescosfeatures four artists from Piedmont and one on exchange from Pavia. We make a stop at the Faraggiana Ferrandi Museum of Natural History in NOVARA to explore The Secret Garden created by the two invited artists. We then go down to GENOVA to stroll through the city centre
and visit the Contemporary Interpretations of clothing in art in the Museums of Strada Nuova, the Museum of Sant’Agostino and the Museum of the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, the works of three artists from Genova and one on exchange from Pavia for the exhibition Manifesto of the antineutral dress. Next we go back up to MILANO and the Sforza Castle to admire the works of a large group of talented contemporary artists working on the theme Nothing but a show. But fi rst we stop over in PAVIA, where various vehicles are used for a Journey through time – From art through life to art , featuring seven visual artists and two theatre-dance companies in the Musei Civici, Castello Visconteo, Palazzo del Broletto and the church of S. Maria Gualtieri, including three in exchange from Biella, Bologna and Genova. Our next stop is CREMONA, where more than 20 artists reinterpret the territory and the walls of the city in an important multidisciplinary initiative eloquently entitled The Naked Wall – Living the city between history and the present,involving contexts as diverse as the walls of the former psychiatric hospital, the Foro Boario, Piazza Roman, the bridge over the Po, the former gaols. We then come to TRENTO and the tunnels of Peidicastello to admire the works of four artists who have examined Points in space – Still, mobile and suspended itineraries. From there we travel to PADOVA, where three invited artists have left signs of Passing through on means of public and private transportation (trams and bicycles). We then go further down the peninsula to FERRARA, where we fi nd the work of two artists for Chrysalises in the Palazzina Marfi sa d’Este, to MODENA for the three artists of Anatomical diaries in the Anatomical Museums, and to BOLOGNA for the Exercises in museum mutualism at the Museo Civico Medievale and the Museo Civico d’Arte Industriale and Galleria Davia Bargellini with the work of two artists for Symbionts. The mirror image of our north-south itinerary begins in CAGLIARI, where five invited artists, including one on exchange from Torino, exhibit their work at the Galleria Comunale d’Arte in Reflexive recollections: unwitting teachers– unwitting pupils. In CATANIA at the former Monastery of San Placido, three young artists interpret Stratifications: from the house of Agata to a Benedictine convent. We then go to MESSINA and the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele for Backstage: subtractions from the visible, the work of seven local artists and one writer on exchange from Cremona. Our next stop is the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce in BARI where three artists take us On stage and off, refl ecting on the theme of Teatro Petruzzelli and Bari, between public and private, emergence and planning. In CAMPOBASSO we visit the Museo Provinciale Sannitico, the Samnite Museum, where three emerging artists address the concept There is no future without a past. ROMA offers us a chance to meet twenty young invited creative talents chosen by a public competition to work on the them of Dynamism at the Museo Canonica.With fi ve young artists, the Biblioteca Provinciale “M. Delfico” in TERAMO hosts Fahrenheit 451. Our next stop is ANCONA where Water in Love comprises two initiatives at the Pinacoteca Comunale “Francesco Podesti”. Two artists are featured in Graftings at the Fabbrica delle Candele in FORLÌ. In PRATO three artists work with Open present and lost eternityin the Church of San Pier Forelli, the Church of Spirito Santo and the Cappella Migliorati, bringing to a close this long and intense journey through Italy’s magnifi cent history and sites.
Gemine Muse 2009 is thus a kind of pilgrimage in which those involved play leading roles in an initiative that continues to surprise and offer suggestions, ulterior proof of Italy’s artistic and creative wealth.

La produzione artistica di una nazione non rappresenta soltanto lo sprigionarsi individuale di pensieri ed emozioni, ma riproduce anche il ritratto autentico di un popolo. Dunque, la cifra del genio italiano. Chi conosce questa generazione sa che, se le verranno concesse le giuste opportunità, può fare grandi cose nell’arte contemporanea e rendere fiera l’Italia negli anni che verranno della propria capacità di innovare, di raccontare se stessa, di svelare agli occhi del mondo la propria missione evocativa. Gemine Muse è un’occasione preziosa per i giovani artisti italiani, in qualsiasi disciplina siano impegnati: dalle arti visive alla musica, dal design alla danza e al teatro. Con questa iniziativa promossa dal Ministero della Gioventù insieme all’Anci e con la collaborazione del Gai, i giovani talenti italiani hanno l’opportunità di arricchire il panorama creativo nazionale, coniugando la cultura antica con il loro spirito contemporaneo. Nessuna generazione passa alla storia solo per aver ben custodito il passato, ma quando riesce ad immettere nel progresso degli uomini nuove idee, opere, protagonisti. I Comuni italiani, con la loro storia, la loro arte e i loro spazi urbani, accolgono i giovani artisti e le loro opere. Con questo spirito la Commissione Nazionale Politiche Giovanili dell’Anci, che riunisce 107 Assessori alle Politiche Giovanili e che mi onoro di presiedere, ha approvato con entusiasmo il progetto Italia Creativa, di cui fa parte Gemine Muse, che ci vede impegnati come Associazione Nazionale Comuni Italiani, insieme a GAI, nella collaborazione con il Dipartimento della Gioventù della Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri. Gemine Muse rappresenta un momento di grande interesse e l’adesione dell’Anci, che svolge un ruolo di coordinamento, testimonia della sua attività per politiche giovanili nelle nostre città. Alcuni anni fa, lavorando sul tema delle nuove forme della creatività artistica e sulle possibili iniziative di sostegno, si pensò di puntare su due elementi particolarmente signifi cativi e per certi versi innovativi: il dialogo fra i linguaggi della nuova produzione artistica e i luoghi più importanti della storia dell’arte da un lato e la collaborazione fra più città e fra diversi livelli di amministrazione pubblica, comuni, sovrintendenze e ministero, dall’altro. Ne nacque un progetto originale, Gemine Muse, che oggi, edizione dopo edizione, possiamo a buon diritto considerare un progetto vincente, consolidato nella sua notorietà e nel suo grande impatto, con le centinaia di artisti e luoghi coinvolti nei vari anni; si tratta di un’esperienza di confronto continuo fra tradizione e innovazione che costituisce un punto imprescindibile delle politiche per la cultura dei nostri territori. L’Italia è ancora un paese ricco di talenti. Un paese creativo. Una meta ambita per quanti cercano ispirazione vivendo in un ambiente ricco di storia, cultura, tradizioni, buon vivere, con paesaggi ancora straordinari e incontaminati. In una società globale è possibile scegliere dove vivere, come vivere, senza avere il timore di sentirsi “estranei”. Ecco perché molti giovani si mettono in viaggio, cercando luoghi dove dare corpo, sostanza ai propri desideri per realizzare una vita professionale, culturale, sociale all’altezza delle proprie aspettative. In questo contesto le politiche pubbliche si devono orientare lungo due sentieri: creare e sviluppare ambienti che promuovono lo sviluppo della creatività giovanile, favorire tutte quelle condizioni che fanno di un paese un “attrattore” di nuovi talenti. Nel primo sentiero si può incontrare il progetto e l’esperienza ormai pluriennale di Gemine Muse. Giovani appassionati che incontrano l’arte, la cultura, i paesaggi urbani che hanno fatto la storia dell’Italia e da essi traggono ispirazione per creare nuova arte.
