GEMINE MUSE
APPOINTMENT WITH CONTEMPORARY ART
AND MORE THAN 80 YOUNG ARTISTS IN 28 ITALIAN MUSEUMS

Gemine Muse is an initiative promoted by GAI - Association for Young Italian Artists Circuit - and by CIDAC - Association of the Cities of Art and Culture. This project was realized in collaboration with DARC - General Direction for Contemporary Architecture and Art of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities. It seeks to promote contemporary art, in particular that of the young artists recognized and supported by the Head Office, in Italy and abroad. The creation of an information circuit of reference as well as a network of exhibition areas in the italian cities taking part in this initiative represents, indeed, the fundamental basis for the creation of a real network of italian contemporary art.

This great event, scheduled to start on November 8 and continuing until 11 January 2004, was made possible thanks also to the collaboration of the Municipalities of AOSTA, ASTI, BARI, BIELLA, CAMPOBASSO, CASERTA, CATANIA, CREMONA, FERRARA, FLORENCE, FORLÌ, GENOA, LA SPEZIA, MESSINA, MILAN, MODENA, NOVARA, PADUA, PAVIA, PRATO, RAVENNA, ROME, TURIN, TRAPANI, TRENTO, UDINE , VENICE, AND VERCELLI.

According to Gemine Muse, these young artists, inspired by an "ancient" work of art, have created a completely new genre of artwork - sometimes obtaining unusual results - to be exhibited in the museums taking part in this project. There are many protagonists attending this year's edition, says Fiorenzo Alfieri, Councillor of Cultural Heritage and Development of the City of Turin, President of GAI and CIDAC "who are the result of Gemine Muse's success; the list of new cities taking part in GAI proves that this event succeeded fully in arousing the interest of these historical cities". "Such adventure - adds Alfieri - shows how important it is to offer future-oriented cultural models both to the public and to the institutions".

Gemine Muse is now contemplating the international scenario."This event has aroused great interest even abroad and many people have expressed their wish to become members of our art network, the fruit of the hard and constant work of our Association" - explains Luigi Ratclif, GAI Association National Secretary - "such interest has led us to consolidate our commitment in Italy as well as to expand the project beyond our national borders starting as soon as next year's edition".

The various artworks selected by the curators of this event confirm the fact that this project is not a mere re-interpretation of old works. Rather, as Virginia Baradel confirms:"The provocation of the past urges the young artist to reflect and to adopt a new creative way of thinking which can be applied especially in the contents of the artwork, thus consolidating the importance of contemplating extra-artistic themes which today seem to be fundamental. Gemine Muse aims to create a shock wave between the two time-dimensions (past and present) so as to boost the creativity of the young artists and of the institutions that take part in this initiative. It's like a match between the art of the past and that of the present, played at the "father's home" according to the rules set by the last generation of artists".

Gemine Muse's unitary planning efforts guarantee the enhancement of Italy's artistic heritage and represent a key-encounter for the enrichment of culture. In the words of Ledo Prato, General Secretary of CIDAC Association, "our Association and the historical Cities of art participating in this project are committed not only to the enhancement of the national cultural assets but also, and especially, to the investment of substantial resources in contemporary art because creativity must be kept alive always".

Gemine Muse - born in Padua in 2001 and initially undertaken by the Councillor of Cultural and Youth Policies, Giuliano Pisani - is an all - italian path which reveals the harmony exhisting between tradition and innovation in the sphere of art works, installations, sound productions, performance and video.

All the actors involved this year in Gemine Muse have unexpectedly made a creative step forward, thus enhancing the features of the project itself. The original formula of the young artist entering the museum as a motivated and attentive visitor to find out his/her ideal alter ego or alter locus/logos has been established and the various players in this game are now fully involved in the project. Also the institutions (GAI, CIDAC and the museums) have interpreted the spirit of the event and often they have modelled the general guidelines on the local needs. In this way, the cultural issues gravitating around young art in a specific territorial dimension have been able to enjoy the new connections this event stimulates and allows, thanks to its national endorsement. A real, fruitful and lively synergy has thus been created, boosting Gemine Muse beyond its original formula, with which it made its debut in Padua in 2000.
All these aspects lead to reflections merging into a more specific critical domain concerning the current status of artistic research. Opportunities and relations have, in fact, become a fundamental part of creative experimentation. Artworks are less and less objective and self-sufficient and more and more relational. Artistic invention has more frequently to deal with places, situations and references. Art sincerely faces real time and real society, among real subjects. The institutions in charge of juvenile creativity have already understood this progress and adapted their methods to the new energies, undefined and unframed, that young artists always represent. Even the other institutions, less prone for their statutory nature to a confrontation with young people, have had to cope with this shockwave, which caused some opposition, giving way to a new perspective made of reciprocal opportunities.
Being able to reach, through Gemine Muse, a multiple aim, since the project covers both individual and institutional levels, has allowed to gather around the artist many intentions that can be traced, then, in the finished work and in its reasoned settlement inside the museum. The preliminary effort to select the artist, to create the artwork and to study the work from the past becomes in the end a remote legacy whose echo lies dormant in the work itself.
Gemine Muse intercepts these echoes to prop up the creativity which is peculiar to the project. In fact, they encompass the originality of the idea behind this event, since it is not only an uncommon and surprising contextual insertion but also an intense virtuous exchange of mutual uninterrupted stimuli. Thus, the artwork epitomizes, on one hand, what young artists look for and create in current times and, on the other hand, to put it in phenomenological terms, a cluster of relationships.
Besides, this quality belongs to young people's universe, where the time for exclusive privacy seems to be definitely over, because telematic technology has brought the whole world in their "room" and because of the mobility they directly experience worldwide. However, this same mobility has brought forth a stronger wish for a sort of relational physicalness, based on direct exchange and, why not, on the confrontation with the museum seen as a kind of sacred space.
Not only single artists take part this year in Gemine Muse, but also groups that interact with a work or with a room in the museum. They exhibit an accomplished work or a work in progressor they even adopt the formula of the performance. In this way, the times and languages used seem to lose their autonomous meaning and to acquire a new narrative value, sometimes metalinguistic and sometimes paradoxical. Seen from this point of view, even the promiscuity of different expressive forms becomes a new and unavoidable event. Technology coexist with basic manual skills, digital techniques with painting and high definition photography with poor materials.
Undoubtedly some hints to the researches of the elder brothers, now inhabiting the contemporary art museums, are still there, and nevertheless a great freedom in the expressive choices seems to be dominating, regardless of avant-guard scruples. What really matters is outlining a research perspective of one's own and placing it in a context where it can enjoy correspondences. Gemine Muse is such a context, where the relationship with the past can be revisited. Entering a museum is, metaphorically, like stepping into the father's house, but, in this case, as adults ready for a confrontation. What Gemine Muse has always tried to do is, in fact, putting contemporary and past artists on the same level, regardless of their individual and historical value. Since the beginning, it has concentrated on "twinning", not because of a dialectic whim, but in order to be able to judge the young artists and their researches seriously and without paternalism. This is one of the reasons why we accepted with interest and satisfaction the freedom with which critics and artists have adhered to the project, and why the collaboration, at a national level, of Antonella Marino has been even more valuable.

SCHEDA GAI - Associazione Circuito Giovani Artisti Italiani

GAI - ASSOCIAZIONE PER IL CIRCUITO DEI GIOVANI ARTISTI ITALIANI

L'Associazione per il Circuito dei Giovani Artisti Italiani è un organismo che raccoglie attualmente 38 Amministrazioni locali allo scopo di sostenere la creatività giovanile attraverso iniziative di formazione, promozione e ricerca. Il circuito GAI, presente già dal 1989, si é dato una forma giuridica che gli permette di coordinare con più efficacia gli interventi di respiro nazionale e di raccogliere risorse nuove attraverso la collaborazione di soggetti pubblici e privati.

L'Associazione si prefigge di documentare attività, offrire servizi, organizzare opportunità formative e promozionali a favore dei giovani che operano nel campo della creatività, delle arti e dello spettacolo. Questo attraverso iniziative permanenti o temporanee che favoriscano la circolazione di informazioni e di eventi, sia a livello nazionale sia internazionale, incentivando il rapporto tra la produzione artistica giovanile e il mercato.

L'importanza di questa rete formata da Enti pubblici italiani é di ordine strategico: ha, infatti, la capacità e l'autorevolezza di portare sul tavolo delle autorità centrali le istanze e le problematiche del settore della produzione artistica contemporanea al fine di ottenere politiche adeguate e coerenti che rispondano alle esigenze di questa area culturale.

Il Circuito Giovani Artisti Italiani ha istituito dal 2001 un sito web con opportunità, informazioni, risorse per il pubblico dell'arte e dello spettacolo. Oltre ad essere la voce dell'Associazione, www.giovaniartisti.it è un luogo di interventi, di dibattito e di scambio di informazioni. Il portale ha una struttura "giornalistica", con una sezione riservata ai bandi di concorso e alle occasioni di promozione e formazione nei diversi settori, una rubrica dedicata alle news e alle recensioni, la open gallery che presenta di volta in volta i lavori di giovani creativi, la banca-dati online alla quale possono iscriversi gli artisti interessati.

L'Associazione ha iniziato un lavoro editoriale con il volume "Progettare il marchio", una pubblicazione che raccoglie e analizza le proposte inviate da giovani grafici per il concorso del nuovo logo dell'Associazione GAI. Un primo libro che ha rappresentato l'inizio di una collana a cura delle Edizioni GAI. E' stata anche avviata una collaborazione con l'Editore Gribaudo per la realizzazione di una serie di libri fotografici.

Per la pianificazione delle attività del 2003 il GAI ha siglato una convenzione con la DARC - Direzione Generale per l'Architettura e l'Arte Contemporanee del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali per una partnership relativa ai progetti nazionali e internazionali, quali, tra gli altri: Movin'Up, programma di sostegno finalizzato a promuovere con un fondo annuale la mobilità dei giovani artisti italiani nel mondo e Gemine Muse - giovani artisti nei musei italiani, realizzato in collaborazione con CIDAC (Associazione delle Città d'Arte e Cultura).

Per quanto riguarda le iniziative realizzate dai singoli Enti, spesso queste si avvalgono della rete associativa per la selezione e per la partecipazione degli artisti provenienti dalle diverse regioni italiane. Attualmente l'Associazione possiede una banca dati nazionale che contiene oltre 20.000 schede di giovani creativi nelle diverse aree artistiche.

SCHEDA CIDAC - Associazione Città d'Arte e Cultura

CIDAC - ASSOCIAZIONE DELLE CITTÀ D'ARTE E CULTURA

L'Associazione nasce nell'aprile del 2000. Riunisce le maggiori città d'arte e cultura del Paese allo scopo di offrire una sede di confronto ed approfondimento delle problematiche comuni, promuovendo iniziative di promozione e valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale, sperimentando forme innovative di gestione.
Svolge una intensa attività seminariale per approfondire temi di interesse delle città socie. Al riguardo ha organizzato, a Salerno, un Seminario sui temi della gestione del patrimonio prendendo in esame la legislazione vigente e individuando percorsi innovativi sulla base delle esperienze già avviate. Allo stesso tempo ha avviato un lavoro sul tema del Colore dei centri storici delle città d'arte. A tal proposito ha organizzato un Convegno a Catania su "I Piani del Colore" con la parteciapzione di esponenti dell'Unesco, del Ministero per i beni e le attività culturali, delle Università con l'intento di favorire uno scambio di esperienze e aprire una riflessione sulle modalità con cui avviare progetti sul decoro urbano nelle città interessate.
E' stata avviata un'attività di ricerca e studi che, in collaborazione con la Compagnia San Paolo di Torino, ha consentito, ad esempio, di individuare un modello di valutazione ex-ante ed ex-post degli eventi culturali. Le ricerche sono state presentate in due Seminari rispettivamente a Torino ed Arezzo.
Con riferimento alle procedure previste dal Capo V del d.lgs. 112/98 (traferimento di funzioni dallo Stato agli Enti locali) ha avviato un confronto con Anci e Ministero per i beni e le attivtà culturali per candidare alcune città socie alla gestione del patrimonio statale, anche attraverso forme di partecipazione pubblico-privato.
Nell'ambito delle attività per la promozione delle città d'arte in Europa, in collaborazione con l'Istituto di Cultura Italiana a Berlino, ha realizzato una manifestazione denominata "Le Piazze d'Italia", nel mese di giugno del 2002, in cui è stata allestita, presso il Museo Musikinstrumenten, una mostra su "Le Piazze d'Italia", curata dal Prof. Benevolo. Durante l'evento sono stati organizzati dibattiti, spettacoli, proiezioni di film, concerti promossi dalle città socie di CIDAC. La mostra "Le Piazze d'Italia" è stata presentata anche ad Altenburg presso il Lindenu Museum da luglio a settembre.
Nel mese di giugno del 2003 una analoga iniziativa si è svolta a Parigi in collaborazione con l'Istituto di Cultura Italiana e il Festival de Saint Germain de Mairie du 6° Arrondissement. La mostra è stata curata dal Prof. Claudio Strinati.
Per il 2004 sono stati avviati contatti con Barcellona, Praga e Stoccolma.
L'Associazione ha predisposto, in collaborazione con Alpitour, per la prima volta in Italia, il Catalogo delle città d'arte per la promozione del turismo culturale.

CIDAC, in collaborazione con il GAI (Giovani Artisti Italiani) è organizzatrice in tutte le città socie dell'evento "Gemine Muse".

SCHEDA DARC - Direzione Generale per l'Architettura e l'Arte Contemporanee del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali

UNA DIREZIONE PER LA CONTEMPORANEITÀ

La Direzione generale per l'architettura e l'arte contemporanee - DARC- è stata istituita nel maggio 2001.

Con la nuova Direzione generale la promozione, il sostegno e la valorizzazione della creatività contemporanea si affiancano alle tradizionali attività di tutela, protezione e restauro dell'antico.
E' questa una delle novità più significative del Ministero per i beni e le attività culturali, che integra la tutela del patrimonio culturale e del paesaggio con l'attenzione per l'architettura e l'arte contemporanee, cui si riconosce pari dignità rispetto alle testimonianze del passato.

Le attività della Direzione generale per l'architettura e l'arte contemporanee riguardano:
l'elaborazione e l'attuazione del Piano per l'arte contemporanea che il Ministro adotta per incrementare il patrimonio pubblico di arte contemporanea;

la conoscenza dell'architettura e dell'arte in Italia e all'estero, d'intesa con le Amministrazioni interessate;

la valorizzazione della creatività e delle opere di giovani artisti ed architetti, anche mediante l'organizzazione di concorsi e di premi;

la consulenza sui falsi nel settore del contemporaneo, per il Comando dei Carabinieri di Tutela del patrimonio culturale;

la promozione della qualità del progetto e dell'opera architettonica e urbanistica, concorrendo con le amministrazioni interessate, alla ideazione e alla progettazione delle opere pubbliche di rilevante interesse architettonico, in modo particolare quelle destinate ad attività culturali o che incidano sul contesto storico - culturale e paesistico - ambientale;

la formazione in materia di qualità architettonica, urbanistica e del paesaggio, in collaborazione con le Università, le Regioni e gli Enti locali;

la ricognizione delle opere di architettura contemporanea e la dichiarazione dell'importante carattere artistico in base alle norme sul diritto d'autore;

la vigilanza sulle Fondazioni la Biennale di Venezia, la Triennale di Milano, la Quadriennale di Roma. La DARC ha compiti di vigilanza anche sulla realizzazione di opere d'arte negli edifici pubblici, in base alla legge che riserva a tal fine il 2% della spesa prevista per la costruzione.

Alla DARC - fanno capo a Roma il MAXXI- Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo - progettato da Zaha Hadid a seguito di un concorso internazionale, per il quale è stato dato avvio ai lavori di realizzazione - e la Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, per il settore contemporaneo.
